Using another photographer’s photo for a custom painted portrait
Written permission is required whenever we use an image, whether in print or digital, from another photographer. Typically, a photographer will provide a print/image release as part of their service. Please read your release prior to deciding to use the photo. If you are unsure of whether or not you will be allowed to use the image, here is some wording you can use in an email to the photographer:
Dear [photographer],
I am working with a digital artist from Tina LeFebvre Studios who creates custom painted portraits for clients from all over the world. I really love the photo you took for me on [date] and am wondering if we can use this for the custom painted portrait. Tina never wants to step on the toes of another artist, and she requires her clients to always obtain written permission from a photographer before we enter into a contract for a custom painted portrait. The photograph you provided for me is very special, and I would love if we could use it.
Tina’s work requires using a digital photograph, whether taken digitally or scanned, to create custom artwork. Examples of her work can be found at www.tinalefebvrestudios.com or on Instagram at @tinalefebvrestudios. When permission is obtained by another artist, Tina always shows the original photograph, as well as giving credit for the original photograph.
I understand that a lot of artists are hesitant to provide permission. If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to give myself or Tina a call. Tina is available at 503.816.8743 or by email at hello@tinalefebvrestudios.com. If permission is not granted, I totally understand and will find another image to use.
Thank you so much! I truly value the memories you have captured for me and would love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
[your name]
